Voices of the Deep

I know, my friend, that you have heard

those voices from the deep;

I know that you and I both know

what's hiding in the dark.

My secrets crawl over ocean floors

migrating with creatures of the deep.

Leave me here, to slip out of my human skin

to wander through the night.

The voices rise up slowly

from the belly of the sea;

they draw me to the ebbing surface,

as silent moonlight slips and slides

over the waves.

Then down, down, down

Through the sea foam into the black ink basin

to the beginning and the end.

This is cold water,

where I will join the lost.

In another life I may become

the one I always thought I would be.

For now I’ll crawl back into the cracks

and wait for you to find me.
