Dear Creature

Dear creature,

you are going someplace beautiful.

You are leaving now

even as I hold you in my arms.

We may meet there again someday.

The veil between worlds

is as thin

as either of our skins.

We live in fragile vessels on fickle waters.

I contemplate your time here,

emerging for a fleeting glimpse at this strange world,

then slipping back under the surface

of the stream from which we both came.

I can’t remember what it’s like there.

In my arms, I can see you

slip back under and away,

quietly, easily.

The sun will rise again tomorrow

and I wonder if you will see it

ever again.
